Hi! I’m Jodi. I love to eat, and I love to travel, so I created Scrappy Trails to share my adventures with you! My husband Phil and I own a bakery/cafe in Burlington, Vermont called August First. We’ve retired from day-to-day operations, and spend our time traveling the US in our funky 1991 camper and also in far away destinations like Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.
Even though I was raised in a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch household (translation — the only spices we had were salt and pepper), I managed to get a taste of world cuisine at a young age. My first job was in a Japanese steakhouse, where the chefs were from Laos. Our staff meals were often so spicy I couldn’t eat them without tearing up (and getting laughs from the kitchen crew), but it was then that I really fell in love with discovering new-to-me cuisine. My next job was in a formal French restaurant, where I learned to make steak au poivre and bananas foster table side. Now I was hooked on cooking as well, and spent the next few decades devouring everything I could learn about Indian, French, Vietnamese, and Thai cooking.
Fast forward to 2009, when Phil and I opened August First. He is the master baker who brought authentic European style slow fermentation breads to our bakery, which still get rave reviews from travelers from all over the world. Today, together we enjoy unplanned adventures that open our eyes to new food, new experiences, and new friends. Things don’t always go as planned, and we sometimes stumble and bumble along the way, hence the name Scrappy Trails!
We hope you enjoy our stories and our travels!
